Gorgeous yellow,
pink, red, orange, white and purple blooms put on a show in early
spring from plants like forsythia, lilac, azaleas, rhododendron,
honeysuckle, mockorange, weigela and bridal wreath spirea. Summer
then greets us with bold blossoms in hues of purple, magenta, blue
and red from butterfly bush, hydrangea, crape myrtle and rose of
Sharon. These deciduous shrubs provide a beautiful backdrop for
the garden.

produces a spectacular fruit display all fall. Violet flowers
are followed by opulent, violet berries clinging close to
the plants arching stems. Beautiful yellow to gold fall color
makes a great background plant. Beautyberry works great for
any dried arrangement. Plant transplants easily into rich,
acid soil enriched with Planting Mix.

It
is probably the best fruit bearer of all Beautyberries. Grows
to 3-4’ high and wide. Should be use in landscapes more.
Great used as a naturalizing plant in the landscape.

is a very maintenance free plant, although you should prune
hard to rejuvenate the shrub occasionally. Grows 6-10’

Viburnum

a great unusual plant for naturalizing. Arrowwood Viburnum
is one to consider. This native to Maryland grows 5 to 12’
tall and 5 to 10’ wide. Plant in full sun to partial
shade. Beautiful white flowers in spring which are followed
by blue berries in mid summer to late fall, and then followed
by orange-red fall color. This plant is easy to grow and disease
and pest resistant. Best performance if in acid soil, enhance
with Planting Mix soil amendment. |

glossy leaves are a great attraction in spring, especially
when in contrasted with the fragrant, white and yellow flowers
in spring. pink and blue berries on plant make this Viburnum
unusual. In autumn the fall colors change from maroon and
crimson. Can tolerate wet soil. Likes acid soil so enhancing
with Planting Mix soil amendment will help the plant perform
its best. Drought tolerant once plant is established. Grows
8-10’ high and wide. |

Faintly fragrant flowers in late winter to early summer, which
is followed by large green leaves. The leaves turn rich yellow,

Fothergilla

native to Maryland, when in full flower, appears as if it
is covered with snow. In the fall it has very attractive bright
red, orange and yellow leaves and grows 3-5’ high and
wide. Fothergilla performs best if planted in acid soil enriched
with Peat Moss or Planting Mix. Fothergilla tolerates wetness
well and can be planted in full sun or partial shade.
